How it works for esomeprazoleEsomeprazole is a type of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by reducing the amount of acid produced by your stomach. It is used alone or in combination with other proton pump inhibitors (epilepsy medications or acid-related pain medications). Esomeprazole protects you from the effects of acid at the source, reducing stomach acid at the time of the most common causes of frequent heartburn (occurring between 1 and 3 days a week). Esomeprazole also helps you get rid of frequent heartburn at a slower rate, by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces. It does this by blocking the absorption of dietary proton pump inhibitors in the stomach. This helps prevent acid at the source from forming. AstraZeneca has been fined $2.8 million for marketing a heartburn drug in the UK and Europe.
The company said the fine came after it received a complaint from a pharmacist at the London-headquartered company. The pharmacist, who asked not to be identified because the pharmacist was unwell, said: "We were advised that we were offering a medication for a certain age range, but not for over the counter indication.
"The patient was informed that the patient had a history of gastroesophageal reflux and stomach ulcers and had been taking an acid medicine for over a month. We had also received reports that the patient was being treated for gastroesophageal reflux for over a year with the drug and the patient had to stop taking the medicine and had to get up and go to work. We were therefore concerned and asked for a complaint."
A spokesman for AstraZeneca said: "The patient has not been informed of the product's risks and is not being treated for any reason, and we are aware of this matter and are investigating further."
The company said: "This is not an issue for AstraZeneca as they are very reputable, and there are no complaints made to the relevant authorities. We are aware of the patient's concerns and are working with the relevant authorities to address them."
